Joan Fuster Museum Monument · Sueca, La Ribera Baixa, Valencia Image of Sueca, not of the place itself. The Joan Fuster Museum, in Sueca, is dedicated to the memory of the Valencian writer and essayist Joan Fuster i Ortells, who was born and died in this town in the Ribera Baixa (1922-1992). Fuster wrote mainly in Valencian and became a key figure in pancatalanism and in the definition of the so-called Catalan Countries; his most influential work was the essay Nosaltres, els valencians (We, the Valencians) (1962), and his research and editorial work spanned linguistics, history and philosophy, which earned him recognition as the most important essayist in Valencian of the 20th century. He was also a controversial figure: he suffered attacks on two occasions attributed to the local anti-Catalanist far right, whose perpetrators were never identified.
