Festival of el Arroz de Sueca Activity · Sueca, La Ribera Baixa, Valencia The main festival of Sueca (Valencia), held in September, centred on the International Valencian Paella Contest. It was created in 1961, when mayor Francisco Segarra Fabià promoted a tribute to rice and paella to mark the 600th anniversary of the Troballa de la Mare de Déu; it began as a national paella contest and, barely five years later, was declared of tourist interest. Participation grew over the years — in 1974 as many as 1,600 diners competed — and since 1990 the contest has also brought together cooks from Europe, America and Japan, with the recipe for Sueca's Valencian paella certified as the original. The winner is awarded the title of Best Paella in the World, and the festival is rounded off with tastings of rice dishes, tapas and traditional sweets.
