Castle of Madrona Monument · Dos Aguas, La Hoya de Buñol, Valencia The castle of Madrona stands on the banks of the Júcar river, in a valley about five kilometres from the town centre of Dos Aguas, next to the present-day El Naranjero reservoir. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2002, today it only retains remains of walls and tower bases; according to the chronicler Rafael Martí de Viciana, a church dedicated to Our Lady once stood within it. Its existence is documented from Muslim times, although its construction cannot be dated precisely; the Records of the Royal Chancery mention it frequently and record repair works in 1292 and 1314. Its history runs parallel to that of the castle of Dos Aguas: in 1256 James I granted it to Ato de Foces, and it later passed through several owners until in 1496 Giner Rabasa de Perellós bought both castles, whose barony became a marquisate in 1699.
