El Genovés Village · Genovés (el), La Costera, Valencia El Genovés is a municipality of the district of La Costera, in the province of Valencia, on the bank of the river Albaida, in a mountainous district bounded to the south by the Serra Grossa. It was an Arab alquería called Xiu, of the territory of Xàtiva, until James I gave it in 1248 to the Genoese physician Baldovino di Baldovino, from whose origin it took its name; the lordship later passed to the Sanz family and, through marriage, to the Fenollet family, until it became independent of Xàtiva in 1762 and, at the beginning of the 19th century, became a municipality in its own right. Its irrigated crops are dominated by the orange tree, and on dry land by the olive tree and the vine. It preserves the church of the Virgen de los Dolores and a monumental fountain. It has a museum devoted to Valencian pilota, opened in 2003. It has 2,822 inhabitants. Photo: 19Tarrestnom65 (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Genovés (el)
