The battle of the Puig Historical milestone · El Puig, L'Horta Nord, Valencia Image of El Puig, not of the place itself. The Battle of Puig de Santa María was fought on 15 August 1237 near El Puig, when the troops of James I, with Bernat Guillem d'Entença commanding on the ground, defeated the army of the taifa of Valencia by the hill of Enesa, within the campaign of the Aragonese king to conquer the city. The victory was decisive: it left the capital without outer defence, consolidated Christian control over Valencian territory and smoothed the way for its conquest the following year, in 1238, a turning point in the advance of the Kingdom of Aragon in the Reconquista. The village of El Puig, dominated by the hills of Montaña la Patà and Santa Bárbara, keeps the legend that the horse of James I made water spring forth with a blow of its hoof on the former. 1237 Photo: M4ttred (Public domain) What to see and do in El Puig
