Hackberry-wood craft of Jarafuel

Curiosity · Jarafuel, El Valle de Cofrentes-Ayora, Valencia

Image of Jarafuel, not of the place itself.

A craft tradition of Jarafuel in making farm tools from the wood of the hackberry or nettle tree (almez): the young tree is pruned down to a single stump, from which sprout ductile, fibrous branches used to make handles, shafts, pitchforks and cudgels. The botanist Cavanilles already described it during his journey through the Kingdom of Valencia in the late 18th century, and it is today the only native industry that remains in the village.
