Chilches/Xilxes Village · Chilches/Xilxes, La Plana Baixa, Castellón Chilches, or Xilxes in Valencian, is a coastal municipality in the comarca of La Plana Baixa, in the province of Castellón, 30 km from the provincial capital. Its history goes back to Roman times, founded in the year 201 BC according to local tradition; it was conquered by James I in 1238 and suffered an assault by Barbary pirates in 1583. A 2007 excavation uncovered a medieval cemetery with 326 graves, containing coins, rosaries and jewellery. Its economy has been based on citrus fruit and market gardening, with melons as a notable crop, and today also draws on tourism and ceramics; its beaches of El Cerezo and Les Cases hold the Blue Flag. It retains the neoclassical parish church of the Assumption and the hermitage of the Cristo de la Junquera, its patron saint.
