El Verger Village · Verger, el, La Marina Alta, Alicante El Verger is a municipality of 5,508 inhabitants (INE 2025) in the comarca of la Marina Alta, in the province of Alicante, situated in the delta of the Girona river, near the coast of Denia, in an irrigated area specialising in citrus fruit. After the Christian conquest by James I, it was granted in 1245 to the nobleman Pere Eiximend Carròs, who kept its Muslim inhabitants; forcibly converted to Christianity, most of the moriscos were expelled in 1609 and the village was left almost deserted until it was repopulated, in the 18th century, by people from Denia and Jávea. Its station belonged to the narrow-gauge railway to Denia, the oldest on the peninsula, opened in 1884 and closed in 1974; the route is today a 6.5 km greenway.
