Castle of la Vall de Laguar

The Castle of Vall de Laguar, also known as Castell de les Atzahares, is a small fortification of Muslim origin with two rectangular-plan enclosures, situated on a crag near Fontilles, in the Marina Alta (Alicante). Its walls, made of rammed earth, are partly cut into the rock. It was conquered in 1609 by Sanç de Lluna and was abandoned after the expulsion of the Moriscos. Today only remains of the walls on the crag survive. It has been declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 30 May 2000.
