Church of San Miguel Arcángel de la Vall d'Ebo Monument · Vall d'Ebo, la, La Marina Alta, Alicante The church of San Miguel Arcángel of the Vall d'Ebo, in the Marina Alta of Alicante, was built in 1576 and is in Baroque style; it holds inside a 17th-century carving of the Virgen de los Desamparados and is the main parish church of this farming municipality of Muslim origin, whose old population centres, known as alquerías and bearing place names such as Bisbilan, Benicid or Benicais, betray that Islamic origin. Vall d'Ebo was the only one of these settlements to survive the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, after being repopulated by its feudal lord, Bernat de Sarrià, with Christian settlers from Mallorca.
