La Vall d'Alcalà Village · Vall d'Alcalà, la, La Marina Alta, Alicante La Vall d'Alcalà is one of the smallest municipalities in La Marina Alta, in the province of Alicante, today made up of the settlements of Beniaia and Alcalà de la Jovada, although historically it came to group together as many as seven villages. In the Middle Ages it was the capital of the fiefdom of the Arab leader Al-Azraq, 'the one with the blue eyes', who resisted James I of Aragon for years, sheltered by the ruggedness of the terrain, until the king exiled him; his memory is preserved in a fountain bearing his likeness and in the castle-palace that carries his name. Beniaia retains a temple built in 1615, shortly after the expulsion of the moriscos, and around the remains of the castle of Alcalà de la Jovada lie the ruins of the old morisco alquerías, abandoned in 1609. It has 159 inhabitants (2025). Photo: Joanbanjo (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Vall d'Alcalà, la
