La Rectoria de la Marina Alta Curiosity · Ràfol d'Almúnia, el, La Marina Alta, Alicante La Rectoria de la Marina Alta is a historic sub-region made up of five villages on the left bank of the Girona river -el Ràfol d'Almúnia, Benimeli, Sanet i els Negrals, Sagra and Tormos-, in a valley hemmed in between the Segària range and the Migdia range. The name comes from the dismemberment of the old Rectoria de Dénia: in large villages a single parish was enough, but in the smaller ones of the upper Girona valley a rectoria could cover several. It is a religious division, now vanished from the administrative organisation, although the name has been kept. El Ràfol d'Almúnia was for centuries the only one of the five villages with its own church, that of Sant Francesc de Paula, built according to tradition in 1535 on top of a former mosque.
