Montgó Nature · Dénia, La Marina Alta, Alicante The Montgó Massif Natural Park protects, between Dénia and Jávea, in the comarca of La Marina Alta, a mountain massif reaching a maximum altitude of 753 metres, declared a protected area in 1987 over 2,117 hectares. Despite its modest height, the proximity of the sea -barely a few hundred metres away- causes an abrupt drop with a strong visual impact. Formed of Cretaceous materials, chiefly marls and limestones, it harbours a network of karst cavities, among which the Cueva del Agua stands out, used by the Romans to supply a military garrison and, later, by the Arabs, who built a dam and irrigation channels there to distribute the water. Its flora, with more than 650 species and more than 80 rare, endemic or threatened taxa, makes Montgó a botanical reference point of the first order.
