The taifa of Dénia and Mujahid Historical milestone · Dénia, La Marina Alta, Alicante Image of Dénia, not of the place itself. Arising around 1010 from the breakup of the Caliphate of Cordoba, the taifa that the slave and emir Mujahid al-Amirí founded in Dénia incorporated the Balearic Islands in 1014 and, after building a fleet, attacked Sardinia in 1015, where he managed to establish himself before being expelled by Genoese and Pisan forces. In the following years he extended his rule over the Levant, occupying Elche, Orihuela and Alicante in 1021, Lorca and northern Murcia in 1038, and attacking Valencia unsuccessfully in 1039. He minted his own coinage, which circulated until the Almohad invasion. On his death in 1044 he was succeeded by his son Alí ibn Mujahid, who reigned for 32 years, until 1076, lacking his father's qualities, leading a dissolute life and burdening his subjects with taxes. 1010-1076 Photo: Arabitere (CC0) What to see and do in Dénia
