El Castell de la Serrella Monument · Castell de Castells, La Marina Alta, Alicante An old fortress that gave the municipality its name, originally called Castell de Serrella, around which remains of the Morisco alquerías of Aialt, Bitla and l'Alcúdia are preserved. Located on the boundary between the municipalities of Castell de Castells and Beniardà, at 1,051 metres above sea level on the Castellet crag, it is a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) of Muslim origin dating from the 11th century, abandoned after the Reconquest, of which today only some parts of the wall, the cistern and remains of the tower survive. It stands on the peak known as Penya Foradada, in the Serrella range, and overlooks the valley of the Guadalest river -a route from the coast into the interior of the region, probably the reason for its construction- as well as the upper course of the Xaló river.
