Festivities of el Medievo de Villena Activity · Villena, L'Alt Vinalopó, Alicante Image of Villena, not of the place itself. The Fiesta del Medievo de Villena is a cultural and festive celebration with a medieval theme in the L'Alt Vinalopó district, held on the second weekend of March in the historic centre of the city, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), mainly in the El Rabal quarter and around the Castillo de la Atalaya, with craft markets, historical re-enactments and performances set in the Middle Ages. The present-day format began in 2002 with the first Medieval Market, promoted by residents of El Rabal to revitalise this quarter of medieval and Andalusi origin. Over the years its programme expanded until it became the Fiestas del Medievo, recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Provincial in 2014 (an official tourism title at provincial level) and Autonómico (at regional level) by the Generalitat Valenciana in 2020.
