Draining of the lagoon in 1803 Historical milestone · Villena, L'Alt Vinalopó, Alicante Image of Villena, not of the place itself. The lagoon that occupied the bottom of the corridor was drained in 1803 by means of a network of canals and drainage ditches, gaining 1,704 hectares of cultivable land. The operation put an end to the malarial fevers and to a wetland of which only springs and salt flats remain. 1803 Photo: Enrique Íñiguez Rodríguez (Qoan) Credit information This work was created by Enrique Íñiguez (Qoan).
