The 1821 Luddite riot

Historical milestone · Alcoi/Alcoy, L'Alcoià, Alicante

Image of Alcoi/Alcoy, not of the place itself.

In 1821 the Alcoi carders and weavers stormed the factories of the river and destroyed the newly installed spinning machines, in what is considered the first documented Luddite episode in Spain. The mechanisation of the textile industry went ahead all the same a few years later.
