La Torre de les Maçanes Village · Torre de les Maçanes, la/Torremanzanas, L'Alacantí, Alicante La Torre de les Maçanes is a municipality in the interior of L'Alacantí, 42 km north of Alicante, with 714 inhabitants. It takes its name from the Casa Alta, a fortified tower of Almohad origin from the 12th-13th centuries that protected the old alquería of Iri and today serves as an exhibition hall. It was dependent on Jijona until its separation in 1794 and gained the title of town in 1805; since then it has lost population, from 1,673 residents in 1897 to around 700 today. The snow trade, stored in wells in the mountains -such as the Pozo de la Nieve, at 1,160 m- and sold in summer to Alicante, was a traditional activity for centuries. It preserves prehistoric sites such as the silos of the Hoya de Cortés, more than seventy structures built between 3000 BC and the Middle Ages.
