La Romana Village · Romana, la, El Vinalopó Mitjà, Alicante La Romana is one of the smallest municipalities of El Vinalopó Mitjà, in the interior of Alicante, with 2,729 inhabitants (INE 2025), of whom almost a quarter are foreigners, mostly British. Its name comes from the Arabic Al rumana, “the pomegranates.” It belonged to the barony of Novelda from 1449, and after the marquisate of la Romana was founded in 1739 by the Maza de Lizana family, it was a scattered settlement of farmsteads until it split off as an independent municipality in 1929. It lives off the extraction and processing of marble, like other neighbouring towns, and off agriculture, with bagged table grapes from the Vinalopó, almond and olive trees; in recent years residential tourism has gained weight, after the property boom left behind industrial estates and ghost streets.
