Bagged table grape of Hondón de los Frailes Curiosity · Hondón de los Frailes, El Vinalopó Mitjà, Alicante Image of Hondón de los Frailes, not of the place itself. Hondón de los Frailes is one of the municipalities covered by the Denomination of Origin Uva de Mesa Embolsada del Vinalopó (bagged table grape), created on 24 November 1982 and shared with Aspe, Hondón de las Nieves, Monforte del Cid, Novelda, La Romana and Agost. It protects two white varieties, Ideal and Aledo, whose bunches are bagged to protect them from birds, insects, pesticides and weather, thereby delaying their ripening until the December harvest. The first reference to bagging dates from 1919, in Novelda, and the custom of eating these grapes on New Year's Eve began in 1909 due to a surplus in production. Bunches are classified as extra category, of at least 200 grams and free of defects, and first category, from 150 grams.
