L'Orxa Village · Orxa/Lorcha, El Comtat, Alicante Image of Orxa/Lorcha, not of the place itself. L'Orxa, Lorcha in Spanish, is a municipality in the Comtat comarca, in the north of the province of Alicante, in the Valencian Penibaetic Range, crossed by the Serpis river. Formerly called Perputxent in reference to the valley, it is dominated by the Castell de Perputxent, of Andalusi origin; subdued by James I in 1254, it passed in 1288 to the Order of the Temple and, after its dissolution, to that of Montesa, which in 1316 granted a settlement charter to the Moors of the valley. It was a Morisco settlement until their expulsion in 1609, after which it was repopulated with Majorcans. With 587 inhabitants, its church of Santa María Magdalena was rebuilt by the residents themselves after its destruction in the Civil War, through days of collective labour.
