Castle of Cocentaina Monument · Cocentaina, El Comtat, Alicante The Castle of Cocentaina is a military Gothic-style fortress built in the 14th century atop Mount Sant Cristòfol, within the Sierra de Mariola, from where it overlooks the comarcas of L'Alcoià and El Comtat. It was built over the remains of 10th- and 11th-century Muslim defensive structures, and was the first military target in the mid-13th-century Muslim uprisings; in the 1303 revolt it was burned and destroyed. It preserves remains of its walls, though what stands out most is the solid main tower, square in plan and Gothic in style, with two floors connected by a cistern. Recently restored, it houses inside a display of archaeological finds from the area and is one of the city's most representative symbols.
