Archaeological site of La Alcúdia Nature · Elx/Elche, El Baix Vinalopó, Alicante The archaeological site of La Alcudia lies 3 kilometres south of Elche, near the río Vinalopó, and covers about 10 hectares excavated over the last few centuries. For almost the whole of the 20th century it belonged to the Ramos family, who carried out the work, until in 1996 it was acquired by the University of Alicante, which opened a new phase centred on its scientific study. The stratigraphic sequence spans from the end of the Bronze Age to the beginning of the Islamic era, with its greatest peak in the Iberian and Roman periods, when the settlement was possibly the main city of the southern Iberian region. Here, in 1897, the Lady of Elche was found, and nearby a fragment of a sculpture of an Iberian warrior with a falcata, now in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional. What to see and do in Elx/Elche
