Dunes of Els Arenals del Sol

The dune system of Arenales del Sol extends alongside a beach about 2,800 metres long by 40 wide, on the coast of Elche (Baix Vinalopó, Alicante), and preserves the largest fossil dunes in the area, making it one of the few dune systems of such importance remaining in Spain. Since 2009, under the Plan E approved by the Government, a system of wooden walkways has been built to access the beach, helping to protect the dunes. Even so, the continuing urban growth of Arenales del Sol is encroaching on the fossil dunes and has made them almost completely disappear.
