Palm Sunday in Elche Activity · Elx/Elche, El Baix Vinalopó, Alicante The Palm Sunday procession of Elche, also known as the Procession of the Palms, opens Elche's Holy Week by re-enacting Jesus's triumphal entry into Jerusalem, with the image of Our Lord Jesus Triumphant — known as the pas de la burreta — the work of the religious art workshop of Olot. Tens of thousands of residents walk through the streets of the centre carrying white palm fronds made by artisan families from the palms of the Palmeral of Elche, a tradition documented since 1371, when the Consell de la Vila joined the festival by distributing alms. The present-day brotherhood was reorganised in 1941 by Vicente Serrano, before passing to the Junta Mayor de Cofradías y Hermandades de Elche.
