Gothic Town Hall of Elche Monument · Elx/Elche, El Baix Vinalopó, Alicante Image of Elx/Elche, not of the place itself. The old town hall of Elche, on the Plaça de Baix in the historic centre, has at its core the Torre del Consejo, a square tower in Valencian Gothic style built between 1441 and 1444 under the direction of the master builder Beiam and originally integrated into the town wall. In 1548 the building was transformed into a Renaissance-style palace, with a façade of two windows on each side of an arched portal and a series of round arches on pillars on the upper floor; in 1645 the east wing was added. The result thus combines the Gothic of the exchange hall and the tower with the Renaissance style of the façade, and preserves a spiral staircase inside.
