Holy Week of Crevillent Activity · Crevillent, El Baix Vinalopó, Alicante The Holy Week of Crevillent, celebrated from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, has its origin in the last third of the 17th century, when only the Wednesday and Good Friday processions were held; it is believed that its emergence was prompted by the arrival of brotherhoods after the expulsion of the Moriscos between 1609 and 1614. The Duke of Arcos donated the Camposanto hill for the Way of the Cross, in 1768, and in the 19th century the guilds progressively added pasos (processional images), such as the Samaritan Woman, the Flagellation or the Christ of Victory. The Civil War destroyed much of these images, replaced from 1940 onwards with new ones, many the work of Mariano Benlliure. Declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 1992 and International in 2011, its processions are among the most notable in Alicante.
