Church of San Andrés de Almoradí Monument · Almoradí, El Baix Segura, Alicante The main parish church of Almoradí (Alicante), on Plaza de la Constitución, with a façade flanked by two towers reminiscent of colonial style. Construction began in late 1829 near the previous church, destroyed by the earthquake that devastated the Vega Baja on 21 March of that year. The Alicante-born architect Francisco Morell y Gómez directed works that were much delayed: the last stone of the bell tower was laid in 1861, and in 1884 some parts still remained unfinished. A new earthquake in 1919 damaged the side aisles and forced the church to close for a year. During the Civil War, documents and sacred objects were burned, and in 1937 its four bells were taken down, some recovered after the war ended.
