On 15 July 1835, during the First Carlist War, the Isabelline army of Luis Fernández de Córdoba (about 36,000 men) defeated the Carlist army of Vicente González Moreno (about 24,000) south of Mendigorría, with about 1,000 Isabelline casualties and 1,500 Carlist. The victory came after the death of Zumalacárregui a month earlier and the failed Carlist siege of Bilbao.
