What to see and do in Salinas de Oro/Jaitz

Salinas de Oro
Village
A municipality of 110 inhabitants whose original name, Ianitz, is documented as early as 947; it split off from the valley of Guesálaz in 1852 and in 2009 officially adopted the dual form Salinas de Oro/Jaitz. It owes its Castilian name to its artisanal salt works, active since at least the 15th century.

Curiosity
Documented since at least 1492, though probably of earlier origin, the Jaitz salt works exploit a salt spring — with a salt concentration far higher than seawater — which evaporates in small pools in the sun and air, following an artisanal method that has changed little since the Middle Ages.
