On 12 December 1834, during the First Carlist War, the Isabelline troops of Luis Fernández de Córdova attacked the Carlist forces of Tomás de Zumalacárregui at Mendaza, entrenched behind stone walls in the enclosures of the area; the Carlists were defeated.
