What to see and do in Lumbier

Lumbier
Village
A town set on a flat-topped hill at 467 m, at the confluence of the Irati and Salazar rivers. Its name derives from "Ilumberri" ("new town" in archaic Basque), associated by Latin geographers with the Vasconic community of the iluberritani cited by Pliny.
Foz de Lumbier
Nature
A canyon just over a kilometer long carved by the Irati river into the limestone rock next to the Sierra de Leyre, with nearly vertical walls between 150 and 400 meters high. Declared a Reserva Natural (Nature Reserve), it protects an important colony of birds of prey, including griffon vultures and Egyptian vultures; the trail follows the route of the old Pamplona-Sangüesa railway, known as "El Irati," now converted into a greenway.
Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción de Lumbier
Monument
A 15th-century parish church, the town's main religious heritage. The municipal coat of arms, with a silver three-towered crenellated castle between an eight-pointed star and a crescent, already appears in the Carta de Unión (Charter of Union) of 1328.
Los 'gatos' de Lumbier
Curiosity
The residents of Lumbier are popularly known as "gatos" ("cats"), a nickname that arose during the Peninsular War when afrancesados (pro-French collaborators) fleeing Madrid were discovered hiding in the town on their way to France.
