A town of the Merindad de Sangüesa whose first documentary mention dates from 882, when the conquest of the "castro Aybaria" by Mohamed Ben Lup is recorded. The place-name comes from the Basque "ibar" (valley); it was a non-Basque-speaking area until the Parliament of Navarre reclassified it as a mixed area in June 2017.
