Prehistoric remains and Roman funerary stelae have been found in its territory. The railway arrived in 1862, and in 1905 the Portland cement factory was established, the town's economic driver ever since. Located in the Burunda valley, between the Sierra de Altzania and the Sierra de Urbasa, it has 1,444 inhabitants (2025).
