Las cuevas de Valtierra Monument · Valtierra, Ribera, Navarra Image of Valtierra, not of the place itself. A district of dwellings excavated into the rock that reached its greatest use in the 19th century, when poverty and precarious farm work led many day-laborer families to dig their own homes into the hillside. They were gradually abandoned from the early 1960s as public housing was built; in the mid-1990s the town council restored them as rural lodging, with seven caves and a cave-bar open to the public since 2002. 2002 Photo: Zarateman (CC0) What to see and do in Valtierra
