The valley of Arce/Artzi, documented as a community of villages since the 12th century, is formed by eight councils -Arrieta, Artozqui, Azparren, Lacabe, Nagore (the capital), Saragüeta, Úriz, and Villanueva de Arce- and fourteen inhabited places, over 145.34 km² of the pre-Pyrenean basin. It has 290 inhabitants (INE 2025); its demonym, artzibartarra, and its own name may derive from the Basque "harritze," "stony ground".
