On 3 February 1834, barely two months after taking command of the Carlist troops of Vizcaya and Álava, Tomás de Zumalacárregui fought one of the first engagements of the First Carlist War in Navarre at Güesa, part of a string of actions he carried out that winter through the Pyrenean valleys (Nazar and Asarta in December 1833, Güesa on 3 February, Urdániz on the 18th, and Abárzuza on the 29th).
