Abaurregaina/Abaurrea Alta Village · Abaurregaina/Abaurrea Alta, Pirineo, Navarra In the Aezkoa valley, at 1,039 m altitude, Abaurregaina/Abaurrea Alta is the highest-altitude municipality in all of Navarre. Documented since 1237 under spellings such as Auerea or Aurrea, for centuries it was simply a hamlet of mountain huts dependent on neighboring Abaurrea Baja, from which it separated as its own entity in 1719. Its official Basque name, Abaurregaina, was adopted in the 1980s. It lives from cereals, timber, and pastures, with 121 inhabitants (INE 2025) and a climate of extremes, from -22°C in winter to 37°C in summer. 1237 Photo: Zariquiegui (Public domain) What to see and do in Abaurregaina/Abaurrea Alta
