A municipality 4.3 km from Pamplona, with the highest population density in the comarca. It was founded in 1184 by King Sancho VI el Sabio on the old site of Atarrabia, to which he gave the name 'Villa Nova' (from which 'Villava' derives). The Camino Francés passes through here about 35 km after Roncesvalles, on the way to Pamplona.
