On 30 June 1521, on the plain next to Noáin, the Castilian army defeated the Franco-Navarrese troops that a month earlier had reconquered much of the kingdom of Navarre. It was the only major pitched battle of the Castilian conquest of Navarre, and its defeat ended any chance of the House of Albret recovering the territory south of the Pyrenees; Carlos I would eventually cede them, for strategic reasons, sovereignty over Lower Navarre in 1528.
