Pablo Sarasate y el Paseo de Sarasate Curiosity · Pamplona/Iruña, Comarca de Pamplona, Navarra Image of Pamplona/Iruña, not of the place itself. The violinist Pablo Sarasate y Navascués was born in Pamplona on 10 March 1844 and died in Biarritz on 20 September 1908; he won first prize in violin at the Paris Conservatory in 1857, at only thirteen years old, and composers such as Saint-Saëns, Lalo and Bruch dedicated works to him. Although he left his city young, he returned to perform there 93 times between 1878 and 1908, many during the Sanfermines. In 1903 Pamplona named the old Avenida de Valencia after him, renaming it Paseo de Sarasate, and in 1959 a monument to his memory was erected in the Parque de la Media Luna.
