The Spanish Inquisition tried, in the 1610 auto-da-fé of Logroño, some forty residents of Zugarramurdi, most of them women, accused of witchcraft on the basis of testimonies grounded in superstitions and personal grudges of little or no reliability; twelve were sentenced to death and five executed in effigy.
