Risco de las Cuevas Monument · Perales de Tajuña, Las Vegas, Madrid El Risco de las Cuevas is an archaeological site located near Perales de Tajuña, made up of about fifty caves carved into a gypsum cliff on the slope of the right bank of the Tajuña river, 350 metres from the riverbed. They are mostly trapezoidal in plan, with rooms three or four metres to a side, dug with tools and plastered, and retain hollows for fitting doors and niches. The archaeological remains found there date back to the Neolithic or Chalcolithic and continue into the Middle Ages. It was declared a historic-artistic complex in 1931 and today is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in the monument category, although the site is suffering progressive deterioration from gypsum erosion and unregulated visitor access.
