Hospital of Antezana Monument · Alcalá de Henares, Cuenca del Henares, Madrid The Hospital de Antezana, or "el Hospitalillo", stands on Calle Mayor in Alcalá de Henares, next to Cervantes' Birthplace House. It was founded by will, on 18 October 1483, by the married couple Luis de Antezana and Isabel de Guzmán, and the following year Pope Sixtus IV authorised the transfer here of the old hospital of San Julián y Santa Catalina. It remains active as a residence for the elderly, today with capacity for 23 people, and it is one of the oldest continuously operating charitable institutions in Europe; Ignatius of Loyola served there around 1526. The building, Mudéjar in style, with a two-storey courtyard, includes a Baroque church with a lath-and-plaster dome, restored in 2015.
