Don Juan in Alcalá Activity · Alcalá de Henares, Cuenca del Henares, Madrid Since 1984, Alcalá de Henares has performed Zorrilla's Tenorio outdoors and free of charge on various stages in its historic quarter, among them Plaza de Cervantes, Plaza de los Santos Niños and, above all, the garden of the Archbishop's Palace, within the walled precinct, on the weekend closest to 1 November. Organised initially by the Fundación Colegio del Rey and, since 2008, by the town council itself, it brings together every year professional actors, such as Maribel Verdú or Michelle Jenner, with local amateurs in the supporting roles, in two performances usually held at nightfall on Friday and Saturday. Declared a Fiesta of Regional Tourist Interest (Spain's regional tourism-interest designation) in 2002 and National (Spain's national tourism-interest designation) in 2018, it is the largest mass staging of the work in Spain.
