Corral de Comedias of Alcalá Monument · Alcalá de Henares, Cuenca del Henares, Madrid One of the oldest surviving corrales de comedias in Europe, located on the plaza de Cervantes in Alcalá de Henares. The town council commissioned it in 1601 from the carpenter Francisco Sánchez, on the former Market square, and throughout its history it functioned as a coliseum from 1769, a romantic theatre in the 19th century and a cinema during the first quarter of the 20th, hidden behind this last use until its recovery in the 1980s. Also known as Corral de Zapateros or Teatro Cervantes, it has resumed its theatrical programming and can be visited with a guide.
