College of Málaga Monument · Alcalá de Henares, Cuenca del Henares, Madrid The Minor College of San Ciriaco and Santa Paula, founded in 1611 by Bishop Juan Alonso de Moscoso under the patronage of the patron saints of Málaga, is popularly known as the Colegio de Málaga because its first pupils came from that city. It was built from 1623 around two courtyards to designs by Juan Gómez de Mora, although the works dragged on because of financial difficulties until almost the end of the century. It suffered serious damage during the Napoleonic invasion, was burned in 1809 and looted, and after the University of Alcalá closed in 1836 it served as an artillery school, archive and asylum before becoming, in 1949, the Nuestra Señora de la Paloma boarding school. Since 1983 it has housed the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, and in 1998 it was declared a World Heritage Site. Photo: Raimundo Pastor (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Alcalá de Henares
