Chapel of San Ildefonso Monument · Alcalá de Henares, Cuenca del Henares, Madrid Chapel of the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso, in Alcalá de Henares, founded in 1499 by Cardinal Cisneros as the origin of the historic University of Alcalá. Conceived to serve as the college's church, it was completed in 1510, combining Mudéjar stuccowork and coffered ceilings; buried within it are Francisco Vallés de Covarrubias and Elio Antonio de Nebrija, along with the rich marble tomb that Domenico Fancelli began and Bartolomé Ordóñez completed for Cardinal Cisneros, today an empty cenotaph, since he is actually buried in the Magistral Cathedral. The ensemble, which mixes late Gothic, Mudéjarism and the Renaissance, is also known as the Cisneros or plateresque style. Photo: Raimundo Pastor (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Alcalá de Henares
