Tower at the Mill of Gandesa Monument · Gandesa, Terra Alta, Tarragona Image of Gandesa, not of the place itself. Tower located next to the mill of Gandesa, declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). The water mill, today quite ruined, is located near the sanctuary of la Fontcalda and made use of the waters of the Canaletes river; above it rises the base of a defensive structure, rectangular in plan and with thick walls, built by combining dressed stone laid in courses of opus spicatum with rammed earth in the upper part. Gandesa, capital of the Terra Alta comarca in Tarragona, sits on a plateau surrounded by mountain ranges such as that of Pàndols, and the river of la Canaleta marks its southern boundary with Prat de Comte and El Pinell de Brai.
